International Box Office: Avengers Crack Top Five All-Time

May 23, 2012

The Avengers remained on top of the international chart for the fourth weekend in a row and that helped it reach fourth place on the all time worldwide chart. Over the weekend it pulled in $59.1 million giving it totals of $726.4 million internationally and $1.18 billion worldwide. To put this into perspective, if the film had earned $700 million worldwide, it would have been considered a smash hit and it would have broken even before the home market. The film was pushed into second place in the U.K. with $4.45 million on 496 screens over the weekend, but it has $71.11 million in that market, making it the film's biggest single intentional market. China is right behind with $69.3 million. It has also topped $50 million in Mexico ($3.27 million on 1,757 screens over the weekend for a total of $53.53 million) and in Brazil ($5.40 million on 915 screens over the weekend for a total of $50.49 million). The film has yet to open in Japan and by the time it does, it will likely have overtaken Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II for third place on the all-time chart.

Dark Shadows remained in second place with $31.0 million on 6,600 screens in 52 markets for a total of $81.80 million internationally. This is likely more than it will make in total domestically, and it still has open in Brazil, Mexico, and some other markets. As for this weekend, the film topped the chart in Japan during its debut there with $5.09 million on 571 screens over the weekend. It also remained in first place in France with $4.52 million on 489 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.79 million. Estimates for the film's production budget run from just over $100 million to $150 million, but it will match the lower end by this time next week and it will very likely top the higher end before its run is over.

The Dictator opened in third place with $30.86 million on 3,249 screens in 29 markets. It should come as no surprise that its biggest opening was in the U.K. where Sacha Baron Cohen is from. In that market it pulled in $7.85 million on 509 screens, which is about the same as $40 million here. In Australia it earned $5.02 million on 346 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.81 million and Germany wasn't far behind with $3.96 million on 498 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.39 million. On the other hand, the film had to settle for second place in Russia with $2.52 million on 775 screens. The Dictator has yet to open in Brazil, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Japan, and other markets and doesn't finish its international run till the fall, to it has a lot of potential left.

That's it for $10 million movies, but American Reunion did come close with $9.77 million on 3,504 screens in 43 markets for the weekend for a total of $159.58 million internationally and $216.08 million worldwide. It has almost caught up to the original film, even though it made $40 million less domestically. On the other hand, it will likely peter out before it becomes the biggest hit in the franchise.

Battleship rounded out the top five with $6.14 million on 5,913 screens in 57 markets for a total of $227.31 million. Its international numbers look much more important after it missed lowered expectations domestically.
