Weekend Estimates: Hunger Games Wins for Fourth Weekend
April 15, 2012
The Hunger Games will enjoy a fourth straight weekend at the top of the box office chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With a $21.5 million weekend, the film moves to about $337 million in total, by far the biggest hit of 2012 so far. The Three Stooges and The Cabin in the Woods will both post decent openings, with $17.1 million and $14.85 million respectively, but neither has broken out of their core demographics enough for a win.
More disappointing, but still not a disaster, is Lockout, which will pick up about $6.25 million for Open Road. On the other end of the style spectrum, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen keeps chugging on for CBS Films with $911,000, down just 8% from last weekend while playing in fewer theaters. It now has $6.1 million in total. Sony Classics' The Raid: Redemption, meanwhile, is projected to hit $1 million in 881 theaters this weekend for 11th place.
In a very crowded weekend for limited releases, Woman Thou Art Loosed On the 7th Day looks as though it will come out on top, based on films that have reported so far. With $650,000 from 102 theaters, the film will average something over $6,000. Hit So Hard will technically top it, averaging about $6,500, but it is playing on just a single theater, which makes picking up those kinds of earning much easier.
