International Box Office: Fire Holds off the Freezing Cold
December 12, 2013
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire again earned first place on the international chart, this week pulling in $42.9 million in 83 markets for a total of $340.6 million internationally and $676.5 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, not unless you count India, where the film made $703,000 on 613 screens. The film has already surpassed its predecessor and it has yet to open in Japan. $800 million worldwide is the current target, which is more than enough to cover this film's combined production and P&A budgets, and possibly the combined budgets for the next next two movies as well.
Frozen rose to second place internationally with $30.6 million in 23 markets for an early total of $55.9 million after two weeks of release. The film took in first place in France ($9.16 million on 729 screens) and in the U.K. ($7.69 million on 505). On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Russia with $2.17 million on 726 screens.
The Four 2 opened in first place in China, and a couple of other markets, earning third place internationally with $14.21 million.
A fellow Chinese film, No Man's Land, was right behind with $11.0 million over the weekend.
Gravity fell to fifth place with $10.0 million in 47 markets for totals of $379.3 million internationally and $630.8 million worldwide.
The White Storm, formerly known as The Cartel War fell to sixth place with $8.0 million in 5 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $21.0 million. Most of that clearly came from China, but we don't have market breakdowns.
Last Vegas returned to the top ten in seventh place with $7.2 million in 13 markets for a total of $23.5 million. This includes a second place debut in Brazil, where it made $952,000 on 320 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.05 million.
Captain Phillips slipped to eighth pace with $6.22 million in 78 markets for an international total of $94.6 million. It opened in third place in Russia with $1.78 million on 630 screens.
Thor: The Dark World slipped to ninth place with $5.4 million in 71 markets for totals of $416.7 million internationally and $610.4 million worldwide. This will likely be the last weekend it spends in the top ten, until it opens in Japan in February.
Carrie rounded out the top ten for the second weekend in a row with $5.84 million in 47 markets for a total of $38.0 million internationally. It opened in a number of major markets, but it wasn't a major hit in any of them. Its best opening came in Brazil where it placed third with $932,000 on 230 screens. It earned fourth place in Germany with $927,000 on 305 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.23 million. It could do no better than fifth in Spain with $828,000 on 276 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $956,000. In France it landed in fifth place with $857,000 on 206.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 fell out of the top ten, but its international tally climbed past $100 million.
