DVD Sales: Life is Not a Beach for New Releases
October 10, 2013
There were quite a few new releases on the DVD sales chart for the week of July 28th, 2013; however, none were big sellers and only really placed well due to a lack of competition. 42 remained in first place with 308,000 units / $4.62 million over the weekend for totals of 798,000 units / $11.95 million after two weeks of release.
The best new release was well back in second place. Teen Beach Movie sold 149,000 units and generated $2.68 million for the week for total early sales of 193,000 units / $3.47 million. These numbers represent the film's exclusive releases, while the next week's numbers will represent its first week of full release. Vehicle 19 earned third place with 98,000 units / $982,000, which is good for a limited release. Despicable Me remained in the top five, this time in fourth place with 96,000 units / $1.44 million for the week for totals of 9.31 million units / $152.01 million. Rounding out the top five was Dragons: Riders of Berk, Part 2 and Part 1. Yes, Part 2 outsold Part 1, which is odd, but it did so by a tiny margin, so much so that it is hidden by rounding. Both DVDs sold 90,000 units and generated $1.11 million in revenue.
Home Run opened in 16th place with 42,000 units / $419,000. This represents the beginning of is exclusive run at Wal-Mart, while it didn't get a wide release till this past week.
