Blu-ray Sales: Jack and Blu
August 21, 2013
There were five new releases to reach the chart on the June 23rd, 2013 edition of the Blu-ray sales chart, but most of them missed the top five. Jack the Giant Slayer earned first place with 234,000 units / $5.42 million, giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 42%. This is acceptable, but not great.
Oz the Great and Powerful was next with 143,000 units / $4.00 million over the week for totals of $602,000 units / $16.85 million after two. Its home market run is weak compared to its theatrical numbers and terrible compared to its $200 million production budget. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters sold 84,000 units / $2.62 million over the week pushing its totals to 411,000 units / $10.24 million after two. 21 and Over did relatively better on Blu-ray than it did on DVD earning fourth place with 53,000 units / $1.24 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 36%. This is okay for a comedy, but not great. A Good Day to Die Hard fell to fifth place with 48,000 units / $1.18 million for the week, while its three-week totals are 498,000 units / $8.95 million. One has to assume the studio was hoping to sell more than that during its opening week.
Up next was Movie 43 in eighth place with 27,000 units / $503,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 39%, which is a bit better than most comedies. The Last Exorcism Part II earned 15th place with 13,000 units / $297,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of 28%. Nothing about this film's run has lived up to expectations. The Dragon Pearl was right behind with 12,000 units / $217,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 31%, which isn't bad for a live action kids movie. In fact, a lot of these movies earning an opening week Blu-ray of 20%, not 30%.
