Home Market Numbers: Identifying the Cause of Death
July 3, 2013
While there were a lot of new releases this week, none of them were monster hits and this hurt the overall market. Sadly, overall Blu-ray sales were better than last week at 1.03 million / $23.85 million. This is 33% higher in terms of units and 30% higher in terms of revenue. On the other hand, compared to last year, this is 20% lower in terms of units and 23% in terms of revenue. DVD sales did much, much worse, leading to an overall Blu-ray share of 46% in terms of units and 53% in terms of revenue.
DVD sales this week were a disaster compared to last week and last year. Compared to last week, sales fell 44% in terms of units and 40% in terms of revenue at just 1.24 million units / $20.77 million. Even worse, this was 65% fewer units and 68% less revenue than the same week last year.
Next week's new releases should help the home market rebound with both Oz The Great and Powerful and Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunter coming out. Last year's new releases were led by Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, both on DVD and Blu-ray. There's no chance this year's new releases will match those figures.
