Blu-ray Sales: February 24th, 2013: Winning the Game
April 14, 2013
There were two new releases that had a legitimate claim on top spot on the Blu-ray sales chart for the week of February 24th, 2013. Argo sold the most units at 378,000 generating $8.68 million earning a opening week Blu-ray of 40%. On the other hand, Game of Thrones: Season Two generated the most revenue at $10.08 million, from 336,000 units sold. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 58%, which is fantastic, even compared to first run releases and not just TV on DVD releases.
Skyfall was pushed into third place with 320,000 units / $7.34 million for the week and 1.92 million units / $39.34 million after two. There are not a lot of Blu-rays that have sold 2 million units, but this one is about to join that short list. The 3D release of Monsters, Inc. helped the Blu-ray return to the top five with 191,000 units / $5.72 million. Hotel Transylvania reached the 1 million units mark with 74,000 units / $2.21 million for the week and 1.05 million units / $27.25 million after four.
Sinister just missed the top five with 73,000 units / $1.47 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 24%, which is low for the genre. Top Gun earned eighth in its 3D debut with 47,000 units / $1.43 million. Unfortunately, they don't release a breakdown over 3D and regular Blu-ray sales. However, given the increase of units sold of over 9,000% from last week, nearly all of the sales were likely 3D. Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome managed tenth place on Blu-ray with 40,000 units / $922,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was an outstanding 57%. Anna Karenina just missed the top ten with 37,000 units / $839,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 32%, which is really good for a limited release drama.
