Limited Release: Anything for Limited Releases
December 19, 2014
It is not a super busy weekend, but that doesn't mean there's nothing worth checking out. Mr. Turner's reviews are incredible, so much so that I'm surprised it hasn't been a major player during Awards Season thus far. It isn't the only film earning great reviews, as both Song of the Sea and Winter's Sleep could find audiences in theaters.

In college, Max fell in love with Alice and made a website to win her heart. That didn't work, but the site he created made him a millionaire. Now he tries to win her again, but doesn't want her to know he's become rich. There's only one review on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a bad sign, as it indicates a lack of buzz. On the other hand, it is positive. Anything for Alice opened on Wednesday at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles.
A man is shocked when his wife asks for a divorce. Thrust back into the dating scene, he tries to find romance in a world of one-night stands. The reviews are mixed, so its box office chances are really weak. Goodbye to All That opened on Wednesday at the IFC Center in New York City.
A French film about a married couple whose relationship has become boring. In an attempt to revive things, they go on vacation, including a hike. However, the wife decides to remain in the woods and meditate on her life. The reviews are good, but not great, so I'm not bullish about its box office chances. If You Don't, I Will opened on Wednesday at the Film Forum in New York City.
A 3D documentary about the inventor Leonardo. While Leonardo is a worthy subject of a documentary, critics are not impressed with this movie and it is being called a stunt movie where 3D is being used to compensate for the lack of depth in the writing. Inside the Mind of Leonardo opens tonight at the Village East Cinema in New York City.
A biopic of Joseph Mallord William Turner, an 19th century British painter. In the movie, he is played by Timothy Spall, best know for playing Better Than Life operator on the Red Dwarf episode of the same name. [Copy Ed: What about as Wormtail/Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter franchise?]. The film's reviews are award-worthy, but it hasn't earned a major nomination on this side of the pond thus far. (It did earn five British Independent Film Awards nominations, on the other hand.) Mr. Turner opens tonight in four theaters, split evenly between New York City and Los Angeles.
A Bollywood film about an alien who arrives on Earth only to have his locket stolen, the locket being his only way of getting back to his home planet. He meets a woman, who tries to help him get the locket back, and the two fall in love. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but that is not uncommon for Bollywood films. P.K. opens tonight in select theaters. Check out Now Running for more details.
The latest animated film released by GKIDS. The distributor has a really good track-record when it comes to releasing high-quality films and this one is no different. It's an Irish film that deals with the legend of the Selkie, a mythological creature that it half human and half seal, sort of. The reviews are fantastic and I suspect it will do relatively well at the box office, given its family-friendly nature. Song of the Sea opens tonight at the IFC Center in New York City.
A Turkish film about a former stage actor who runs a motel near a Turkish village. He considers himself to be the best person in town and gets involved in everyone's life. However, everyone in the village, including his wife and his sister, have reason to hate him. The reviews are fantastic and the film won the Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It should do well in limited release, but its chances of expanding significantly are limited. Winter's Sleep opens tonight at the Film Society Lincoln Center in New York City.
