International Box Office: Guardians Have Double-Milestone Weekend

Not only did Guardians of the Galaxy return to top spot on the international chart this past weekend, it reached two major milestones along the way. Over the weekend, it pulled in $23.1 million in 22 markets for totals of $404.8 million internationally and $732.6 million worldwide. The film earned $37.97 million in China, but that was for the full week, giving it $69.04 million after ten days of release. The film has yet to open in Italy and it might have a shot at $800 million worldwide by the time it ends its run there.
Dracula Untold slipped to second place with $22.5 million on 6,619 screens in 55 markets over the weekend for a three-week total of $95.73 million. The film debuted in more than a dozen mostly smaller markets. It did crack $1 million in its openings in Thailand ($1.08 million on 182 screens) and in Philippines ($1.00 million on 144). Its biggest holdover market was Russia where it added $4.32 million on 1,084 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.87 million after two weeks of release.
Gone Girl remained in third place with $20.2 million in 57 markets for totals of $94.7 million internationally and $201.5 million worldwide. This is the fifth film in David Fincher's career to reach $200 million worldwide, and the fourth such film in a row. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did remain in first place in Australia with $2.74 million on 420 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.01 million after three weeks of release. On the other hand, it slipped to second place in the U.K., but still pulled in $3.80 million on 555 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.72 million, also after three weeks of release.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had a quartet of major market openings this past weekend and that helped it power back into the top ten. It earned fourth place with $20.0 million on 33 screens over the weekend for a total of $185.4 million internationally and $375.0 million worldwide. The film earned first place in the U.K. with $7.70 million on 522 screens. It also topped the charts in Germany ($3.31 million on 514 screens) and in Spain ($1.42 million on 470). The film only managed third place in France, but with $4.57 million on 664 screens.
Annabelle fell to fifth place with $19.2 million in 51 markets for an international total of $92.0 million. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did earn first place in New Zealand with $272,000 on 41 screens. It also remained in first place in Brazil with $3.09 million on 389 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.84 million after two weeks of release in that market.
The Maze Runner returned to sixth place with $17.1 million in 52 markets for totals of $161.5 million internationally and $252.2 million worldwide. The film opened in second place in a pair of major markets earning $5.09 million on 456 screens in France and $1.79 million on 407 screens in Germany.
Breakup Buddies fell to second place in China and seventh place internationally with $10.0 million over the weekend for a total of $172.16 million after three weeks of release.
The Book of Life opened in eighth place with $8.6 million in 19 markets. This includes Mexico, where it earned second place with $3.35 million on 2,018 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.61 million. It also placed second in Brazil with $1.32 million on 427 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.77 million.
The Equalizer fell to ninth place with $8.0 million in 88 markets for a total of $69.68 million internationally. It won't match its domestic box office internationally, but it will come close enough that it will break even sooner rather than later. Its only major market opening of the weekend was in Spain, where it placed third with $1.19 million on 344 screens.
The Judge entered the top ten with $6.5 million in 37 markets over the weekend for a early total of $8.7 million after two weeks of release. Its biggest market was Russia where it opened with $1.62 million on 795 screens, which was enough for second place there.
