International Box Office: Happy New Year!

It's Chinese New Year and the international box office was led by two Chinese films. The Monkey King earned first place with $46 million in 7 markets for a total opening of $54 million. Like most Chinese films, we don't have breakdowns of individual markets.
The next Chinese film was Dad, where are we going? with $34 million, all of which was earned in China.
Last week's number one film, The Wolf of Wall Street fell to third place with $26 million over the weekend for a total of $122 million after six weeks of release. It had no major market openings this past weekend, while it is nearly done its international run. That said, it is already at least a moderate success financially and will break even very early in the film's home market run.
Frozen reached a major milestone with $24 million in 45 markets over the weekend for an international total of $504 million. It became the 43rd film to reach the $500 million mark internationally. Meanwhile, it reach $864 million worldwide and is now ahead of Catching Fire and The Desolation of Smaug in that regard. It is still about $100 million from Despicable Me 2, but with China and Japan still ahead, it could get there.
ВИЙ, a.k.a. Viy (pronounced V) was next with $17.7 million on 1,030 screens in its native Russia. This is a huge opening. How huge? Last weekend, the overall box office was $17.11 million.
The Man From Macau was the third Chinese film on this week's list. It earned sixth place with $12.5 million in 6 markets over the weekend.
Up next was Miss Granny, a South Korean movie, which managed $12.27 million on 1,022 screens over the weekend for a total of $26.58 million after two.
12 Years a Slave slipped to eighth place with $9.7 million in 41 markets for an international total of $50.6 million. It earned an estimated $1.3 million on 122 screens in Australia, which might be enough for first place there. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones made about the same amount this weekend, but we don't have final figures for 12 Years a Slave.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit fell to ninth place with $9.1 million in 55 markets for a total of $61.1 million internationally. This is more than it will finish with domestically and it is very, very close to $100 million worldwide. Its biggest new release of the week was France where it made $1.9 million on 394 screens.
I, Frankenstein rounded out the top ten with $7.5 million in 25 markets for a still early total of $25.0 million. It opened in fourth place in the U.K. with $1.32 million, while it only managed sixth place in France with $1.28 million on 333 screens.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug fell out of the top ten, but it crossed $600 million internationally. Despicable Me 2 likely also crossed that milestone, but due to the holidays, numbers from China were sparse.
