Synopsis

A special day of bonding takes a dark and dangerous detour for an 11-year-old boy when his uncle's violent past dramatically changes both their futures in LUV, a poignant and gritty coming-of-age story. With his mother in rehab and his father out of the picture, young Woody Watson lives with his grandmother in suburban Baltimore and longs for his family to be reunited. His charismatic Uncle Vincent has just returned home after eight years in prison, determined to straighten out his life by opening a high-end crab shack. One morning, instead of dropping Woody off at school, Vincent decides to give the boy a tutorial on how a man gets things done. After a trip to a tailor to get Woody a customfitted suit, the pair heads to the bank to sign off on the loan Vincent needs to fulfill his dreams. But when a problem with the collateral puts the brakes on Vincent’s plans, his lack of legitimate business experience and his criminal record leave him with no good options. Desperate not to lose his only chance at success, Vincent throws back in with his former associates, convinced that one last score will set him free. With Woody in tow, he plunges into the violent world he thought he had escaped, running a drug deal for his exemployer, Baltimore crime boss Mr. Fish and Fish’s brother Arthur. In the course of one harrowing day, Woody comes face to face with double-crossing thugs and brutal turf wars, and sees his beloved uncle in a tragic and frightening new light. Ultimately, the boy will have to decide whether to follow his flawed hero...or become his own man.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 2nd, 2013

April 1st, 2013

It's a bad week on the home market. The biggest release of the week is a mini-series, The Bible, but it is earning just about as much criticism as praise. (And not just for the Obama / Satan fiasco.) After that release, the quality quickly drops, so much so that there's a 1950s TV on DVD release on the front page of the new releases. As far as Pick of the Week contenders are concerned, there are not many. The Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled is awesome, but it has a high price and if you are a fan, then you likely have all or nearly all of the movies it contains. The only other major contender is John Dies at the End. It's too bizarre for most moviegoers, but if you are into these types of films, then the DVD or the Blu-ray are worth it. More...

Per Theater Chart: Love Leads the Way

January 23rd, 2013

Amour continues to show legs most limited releases can only dream of. Despite expanding its theater count to 36, the film topped the per theater chart with an average of $11,479. It is very rare for a wide release to reach the $10,000 level during this time of year, but that's exactly what Mama did, as it opened with an average of $10,730 during the three-day portion of the weekend. Quartet might have reached the $10,000 mark. We are still relying on studio estimates and at the moment the studio says it made $320,000 in 32 theaters for an average of exactly $10,000. More...

Weekend Estimates: Mama Wins MLK Weekend

January 20th, 2013

For all the Oscar hype, moviegoers are voting with their feet this MLK weekend for a more straightforward entertainment bang for their buck. Mama is set to win the weekend by a large margin, with Universal estimating a $28.1 million three-day weekend and about $33 million over four days. With the film playing in a relatively modest 2,647 theaters, that translates into a per theater average of $10,625, comfortably ahead of any other wide release. Jessica Chastain has dual reasons to celebrate, with Zero Dark Thirty set to finish second for the weekend with $17.6 million. Fellow Oscar-hopeful Silver Linings Playbook will be third with about $11.35 million over three days in its first weekend in wide release. More...
