New on Disc: The Cameraman gets a Well-Deserved Criterion Collection Release

June 16th, 2020

The Cameraman

A lot of people and industries are suffering because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the entertainment industry is among the hardest hit. Theater closings three months ago are now having a knock-on effect on the home market, as every major theatrical release of 2020 has hit the home market in one form or another, so until theaters are fully open again, no major new theatrical hits will arrive on the home market. Fortunately, while there’s little in the way of quantity, there’s some serious quality this week. Pretty in Pink is making its Blu-ray debut. We have two massive box sets that are worth picking up. However, the best choice is The Cameraman: The Criterion Collection on Blu-ray. More...

Theater Averages: Frances has a Saintly Start

March 6th, 2020

Saint Frances

Saint Frances was the only new release to land in the $10,000 club opening with $14,298 in one theater. The re-release of Come and See continued to do well earning $12,859, also in one theater. Emma expanded into nearly 100 theaters earning an average of $11,955 along the way. More...

Weekend Predictions: Will the Invisible Man be Seen this Weekend?

February 28th, 2020

The Invisible Man

It is the final weekend of the month and there’s only one wide release, The Invisible Man, which is the eighth horror film released in 2020 so far. This is going to hurt its box office potential; however, its reviews will be a major selling point, assuming audiences like the movie as much as critics do. This weekend last year was the first weekend of March. The box office was led by How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, while Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral made it a close race. Unless The Invisible Man is a surprise $40 million hit, 2020 has almost no chance of matching last year’s box office. More...

Theater Averages: A Match Made in Heaven

February 27th, 2020

Emma

Emma played matchmaker with audiences and succeeded to the tune of $234,000 in 5 theaters for an average of $46,896. It has significant expansion planned for this weekend and an opening like this is a hopeful sign. On the other hand, I don’t think Come and See will expand significantly, as re-releases rarely do. That said, it did earn $16,053 in one theater, so that theater is happy they booked it. It isn’t looking as bright for Seberg. Granted, it did earn an average of $15,727 in three theaters; however, it was very front-loaded and that’s a bad omen going forward. More...
