Synopsis

Erin's wry wit and unfiltered frankness charm newly single Garrett over beer, bar trivia and breakfast the next morning. Their chemistry sparks a full-fledged summer fling, but neither expects it to last once Erin heads home to San Francisco and Garrett stays behind for his job in New York City. But when six weeks of romping through the city inadvertently become meaningful, neither is sure they want it to end. And while Garrett's friends Box and Dan joke about his pre-flight calorie-cutting and his full-time relationship with his cell phone, they don't like losing their best drinking buddy to yet another rocky romance. At the same time, Erin's high-strung, overprotective married sister, Corinne, wants to keep Erin from heading down an all-too-familiar road. But despite the opposite coasts, the nay-saying friends and family, and a few unexpected temptations, the couple just might have found something like love, and with the help of a lot of texting, sexting and late-night phone calls, they might actually go the distance.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 30th, 2010

November 29th, 2010

This is the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which means it is the day after Cyber Monday and the end of the busiest gift buying weekend of the year. So it should come as no surprise that there's a bit of a lull when it comes to DVD / Blu-ray releases. In fact, the biggest selling film of the week doesn't come out till Saturday. There are still more than a few releases that are worth checking out, including this week's Pick of the Week, Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 on Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack. However, there is no real depth to this week's list and the drop from top tier to second tier is fast and steep. More...

Resident Evil is Good, Holdovers are Not

September 13th, 2010

Resident Evil: Afterlife nearly matched expectations during its opening weekend, but it was the only bright spot on the box office chart and overall the box office plummeted to just $82 million. That's 23% lower than last weekend and 11% lower than the same weekend last year. The only good news is 2010 is still up on 2009 by nearly 4% at $7.81 billion to $7.51 billion. 2010 could still blow its lead if the box office remains as weak as it was over the weekend, but that seems like a longshot. More...

Will Resident Evil be Good for the Box Office?

September 9th, 2010

The weekend after Labor Day long weekend is often the worst weekend at the box office for the entire year. This time around there is only one wide release, Resident Evil: Afterlife, which will have no trouble topping the chart. In fact, it will be the only film to reach $10 million over the weekend. Will it do well enough to help 2010 keep pace with last year when there were four wide releases? More...

New Releases were Hardly Working

September 7th, 2010

There was some good news and some bad news this weekend. On the one hand, none of the new releases were able to live up to expectations, which resulted in a 6% drop-off from last weekend to $106 million. On the other hand, that was over 7% more than the same weekend last year. Throw in Monday's numbers and Labor Day 2010 earned $133 million, 6% ahead of 2009. Year-to-date, 2010 extended its lead over 2009 to 4.2% at $7.71 billion to $7.37 billion. More...

Will New Releases Have to Work Hard to Succeed?

September 2nd, 2010

Labor Day long weekend is the official end of summer vacation, although the summer blockbuster season has been over for a couple weeks now. It is arguably the worst long weekend of the year to release a film, but there are three wide releases this week hoping to buck that trend. While none really have a chance at being anything more than a mid-level hit, all three have a shot at top spot, and all three might top last year's number one new release, All About Steve. Meanwhile, overall 2010 should match 2009 with plenty of room to spare. More...

2010 Preview: September

September 1st, 2010

Summer has ended and while there were some bigger than expected hits in August, this trend is unlikely to continue in September. There are four weekends this September and nearly a dozen films opening wide, plus a few more that may or may not open wide. Of all of those films, maybe three of four will be midlevel hits, while only one film, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole 3D, has a real shot at reaching the $100 million milestone. This is compared to last year when we had two $100 million hits, although one of those was Paranormal Activity, which didn't expand truly wide till Halloween. Hopefully 2010 can gain ground on 2009 overall, even if it doesn't have as many $100 million hits. More...

Contest: Just a Little Bit Farther

August 27th, 2010

After being pushed back at the last minute, Going the Distance looks to be the widest release next week. This could be enough to come out on top at the box office, while no matter where it ranks, it is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Going the Distance . Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Jersey Shore: Season One on DVD, as well as an original size plus Herpes from GIANTmicrobes. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of The Hills: Season Four on DVD, as well as an original size plus Herpes from GIANTmicrobes. (On a side note, the fact that we have two Reality TV shows as prizes this week and a plush STD is a total coincidence. I ordered some more microbes and accidentally bought a couple extras Herpes.) Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2010 Preview: August

August 1st, 2010

July started out rather well, and while there was a little weakness in the end, four films surpassed $100 million, and another could join them soon. That said, there don't appear to be any $100 million movies opening in August; in fact, there is a chance none will come close. Worse still, August of last year saw three $100 million movies open in the first three weeks. There's almost no chance that will happen this year, so 2010 will likely lose ground to 2009 in the yearly box office race. More...

More...
