DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 27th, 2010

July 26th, 2010

It is a deceptively slow week in the video market. I love that word, "deceptively", because it really has no meaning. In the first sentence it could mean the week appears to be busy, but it is really slow. Or it could mean the week appears to be slow, but it is really busy. In this case, it's the former. While there are 350 releases for the week on Amazon.com, there's only one significant first run release, Clash of the Titans. Moving down the list of best sellers, it doesn't take long until you run into second tier, or even third or fourth tier releases. Arguably the best release on this week's list of reviews is Mother, but that came out last week it's on the list because the screener was late. The two competitors for Pick of the Week from this week's releases are Batman: Under the Red Hood - Blu-ray with Litho Cell and Ip Man - Collector's Edition Blu-ray. Which one wins depends on whether you like martial arts movies or comic books more. For me, it's a tie. More...

DVD Sales - Paul Blart Heads Up Busy Week

June 4th, 2009

There were nine new releases to crack the top 30 on this week's sales chart, including Paul Blart - Mall Cop. The film, which is the highest grossing January release of all time, took top spot with 1.82 million units sold for opening week consumer spending of $31.01 million. More...

DVD Releases for May 19th, 2009 - Part I

May 19th, 2009

It's a strange week when it comes to spotlight reviews with a lot of movies coming in pairs. We have a pair of Ben Affleck releases, a pair of Westerns from the Centennial Collection, a pair of Philip K. Dick releases, a pair of World War II films, a pair of stand up concert DVDs. We even have a spotlight review featuring twins. Besides that quirk of fate, there were a few releases that were contenders for the DVD Pick of the Week, including Terminator 2 - Judgement Day - Skynet Edition, True Blood - Season One, A Bug's Life - Blu-ray, all of which are coming on Blu-ray. In fact, the only contender for DVD Pick of the Week that is actually on DVD is The Guild - Season Two. That said, the best on this week's list is A Bug's Life - Blu-ray, and it is this week's DVD Pick of the Week. With all the double-shots, it comes as no surprise that this week's list had to be split into two, while the second page can be seen here. More...

Weekend Estimates: Another Good Weekend at the Movies

February 8th, 2009

Once more, moviegoers defied predictions and visited movie theaters in big numbers this weekend. He's Just Not That Into You overcame mediocre reviews to top the weekend with an impressive $27.465 million, according to Warner Bros. Sunday estimate. Taken fell only 18% from its opening to score $20.3 million. Coraline also had a very strong debut with $16.3 million and clearly managed to find its audience in spite of being a challenge to market. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of February 6th, 2009

February 8th, 2009

There was an equal mix of wide and limited releases on this week's list, but as usual, it is the wide releases that dominate the top end of the websites for this week. But it was the smallest wide release for the week, Coraline, that had the best Official Site, and it is this site that wins the Weekly Website Award. More...

Will Fanboys Flock to Theaters for Limited Releases?

February 6th, 2009

Only four limited releases this week, and only one of those is opening with overall positive reviews. That film, a foreign language martial arts movie, should please genre fans, most of whom will wait till the home market to check it out. Also coming out this week is the latest set of Oscar nominated short films, which is always a treat for fans of the short film format. More...

2009 Preview: February

February 1st, 2009

2009 got off to a great start and February hopes to continue that run, but I don't think that's likely. First of all, none of the releases coming out this month look like they have what it takes to reach $100 million. Or even $80 million. This means the best film of this month will likely be lower than the biggest-earning film of last month and the biggest earner of this month last year. Hopefully there will be fewer outright misses and more mid-level hits, which will help 2009 keep pace with 2008. More...
