Synopsis

It all begins with widowed father and family-advice olumnist Dan Burns, who is still reeling from the heartache of loss and takes refuge by trying to maintain order with his three rebellious young girls, while dodging anything unexpected or outside the box. But when Dan heads to Rhode Island, his miffed daughters in tow, for the annual fall weekend thrown by the large and boisterous Burns family, everything changes. Soon after his arrival, he runs into an alluring woman named Marie in a bookshop. For the first time in a very, very long time, Dan experiences real, live sparks - only to have to douse them liberally when he discovers Marie is, in fact, the brand-new girlfriend his brother Mitch is about to proudly introduce to the family. As the weekend gets underway in the close quarters of a crowded house filled with quirky, prying relatives, Dan and Marie try to squelch and cover up their growing mutual attraction at every turn, leading to one comical situation after another. Yet, no matter how hard they try to do the very opposite, Dan and Marie can’t help but fall in love. Now Dan is about to realize that no matter how wise safety might seem, when it comes to real life, he’s going to have to break all the rules.

DVD Sales - Bee Earns an A on Sales Chart

March 23rd, 2008

There were eight new releases to chart this week, including seven of the top eight spots. Needless to say, we had a new sales champion with Bee Movie leading the way with 1.41 million units sold for total revenue of $23.09 million. That isn't the best start of the year, but it is close. In fact, the film is already the ninth best-selling DVD of 2008 More...

DVD Releases for March 11, 2008

March 11th, 2008

A rather slow week for new releases, which is good because three DVDs arrived late last week and I was able to get caught up on spotlight reviews. (Actually, I'm not completely caught up as at least one failed to show up in time for this week.) As for the DVD Pick of the Week, the obvious choice would seem to be No Country for Old Men, but the lackluster DVD just screams double-dip and in the end I went with Stargate - Ark of Truth - Buy from Amazon instead. Claus is Box Office Coal

November 12th, 2007

There was little to cheer over the weekend, as all four of the new releases missed expectations, some by substantial margins. This left the overall box office struggling with $113 million over the weekend, down 16% from last weekend and 11% from the same weekend last year. This means the streak of year-to-year growth ends at one. On the other hand, had the four wide releases mere met expectations, the overall box office would have been within a rounding error of last year. More...

Will Santa Bring a Gift to Theater Owners?

November 8th, 2007

With the streak of year-to-year declines finally over, the winter holiday season is looking to start earning back some of the loses from October. The good news is, this weekend there are three films that should top $20 million at the box office compared to just one that did last year. Bad news, that one film was Borat, which earned more than $28 million and there's a chance no film will replicate that performance this time around. More...

Gangsters are Busy Bees at the Box Office

November 5th, 2007

November got the box office back on track as a record-breaking opening for Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe, (and for that matter, Jerry Seinfeld), helped the overall box office earn $134 million over the weekend. That's 33% higher than the last weekend, but more importantly, it was 4% more than the same weekend last year. That growth doesn't even keep up with the growth in ticket prices, (although it is extremely close), however, it does stop the six-week slid we've been experiencing and hopefully this will mean bigger business over the holidays. More...

First Weekend in November is Buzzing

November 1st, 2007

Thankfully October is done, but it did a lot of damage in four weeks. However, the damage has been done and the fall box office is down just under 1% from last year while ticket sales are down more than 5%. However, this weekend we have two potential $100 million movies and both should be significantly stronger than last year's surprise champ, Borat. More...

Saw Can't Save October

October 29th, 2007

We finally had a massive box office hit at the box office this week as Saw IV lived up to expectations. This helped the overall box office grow to $102 million, which is 6% more than last weekend. However, it was weaker than the same weekend last year by 3%, which stretches the losing streak to 6 weeks. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of October 26, 2007

October 27th, 2007

Only two wide releases this week, and while there were many more limited releases, there weren't many sites that stood out and demanded to be given the Weekly Website Award. In fact, there were more movies released this week without site than were released with sites that were merely above average. The best of this humble group was Dan in Real Life - Official Site, and it's the winner of the Weekly Website Award. More...

October 25th, 2007

Will Long Nights Mean Bigger Box Office Numbers?

October 18th, 2007

I miss September. Sure, the box office was weak, but everyone expected it to be weak so it wasn't depressing like it is now. The overall box office has been in a slump the past few weeks, and so has my prediction record. To make matters worse, there are six films opening wide, or semi-wide, which complicates matters when you are trying to predict opening weekends. This level of competition will also hurt the individual films and it is very likely that at least four of them will fail to live up to potential. Which four those are is the question. More...

2007 Preview: October

October 1st, 2007

October means one thing: Free candy. ... Oh yeah, and the unofficial start of Award Season. And Halloween brings us a few horror films as well. Unfortunately, this year October is rather weak, with no film looking like a strong contender for $100 million and most of the films with early Oscar buzz having performed poorly with the critics. The only good news is last October was also weak at the box office, meaning there's at least a reasonable shot at 2007 maintaining its box office lead over 2006. More...

International Details - Race to the Top Ends Short

March 30th, 2008

The latest Indian movie to be released on the worldwide stage was Race, which earned $9.90 million on 1212 screens in 16 markets placing sixth on the international charts. It did very well in India, but exact numbers were not released. More...

DVD Rentals - No Rental Better than Old Men

March 23rd, 2008

New releases took the top four spots on the rental chart this week including No Country for Old Men, which earned first place with $10.20 million during its opening week. More...

More...

Have Audiences Seen Too Much Saw?

October 25th, 2007

It's the last chance for October to make a splash at the box office. On the one hand, Saw IV is opening, and it should be the biggest hit of the Fall so far. On the other hand, it is tracking more weakly than Saw III, which opened this weekend last year. More...

More...

Movie Website Updates for September 23 - September 29, 2007

September 29th, 2007

Another slow week, but at least we have a clear contender for the Weekly Website Award. That site is The Kingdom - Official Site, which combines all the usual features with a good mix of extras as well as enough sound and animation to keep surfers interested. More...

Movie Website Updates for August 12 - August 18, 2007

August 18th, 2007

Busy week with more than 30 sites featured on the list. However, none really stand our as award-worthy; in fact, most only stand because of a lack of style. Hopefully as the fall season progresses and we near the holidays, we will get bigger and better sites launching. More...

Movie Website Updates for August 5 - August 11, 2007
